ZAIAH CONNECT CIC
Breaking Barriers to Wellbeing:
Empowering women and older adults through culturally rooted movement, creativity and connection.
OUR 2026 GOAL
By the end of 2026, our goal is to have empowered 1,000 women across the UK to move, connect and reclaim their wellbeing through dance, fitness and creative community programmes. Together, we’re breaking barriers to wellbeing, one woman at a time.
Mission
BAME women and women in general are statistically less physically active than men and their white counterparts, due to a range of social, cultural, and financial factors. Dance is an effective strategy to address this inactivity, offering benefits for creativity, social connection, mental health, and physical wellbeing.

-
According to data from the 2023/24 period, activity gaps remain entrenched among ethnically diverse groups: only 56 % of Black adults and 55 % of Asian adults meet recommended levels of physical activity, compared with ~65 % of White British adults. *
-
Economic deprivation further increases inactivity, with the most deprived areas showing the highest levels of inactivity. Common barriers include lack of time (due to household/care responsibilities), financial constraints, self-confidence, Safety concerns and lack of culturally appropriate spaces. *
-
Whereas for older people more than 2 million people in England aged over 75 live alone, and more than 1 million older people say they go over a month without speaking to a friend, neighbour or family member.*

At the same time, wellbeing and wellness have become increasingly commercialised, often expensive, exclusive and unrelatable.

Zaiah Connect CIC exists to close this gap, making movement, culture and wellbeing accessible to those who need it most.

-
Research suggests that dance may be better than other forms of structured physical activity for improving psychological well-being and cognitive capacity
-
A systematic review found that dance interventions (versus dance-movement therapy) produced a large, significant effect (effect size d = 0.81, p < 0.001) on mental health outcomes (depression, anxiety, quality of life, interpersonal skills).
-
When researchers combined data from multiple studies, they found that people who took part in dance-based programmes experienced strong and reliable improvements in their mental health, including reduced depression and anxiety, better quality of life, and stronger social relationships.
